Spain Reports 49,000 Migrants Crossed Into Ceuta From Morocco in One Day

Spanish authorities said more than 49,000 migrants entered Ceuta, Spain's North African enclave bordering Morocco, within one day. Most reportedly swam around a breakwater to reach the beach, overwhelming police and prompting the deployment of soldiers. A security statement said 19 bodies were recovered from the water. The arrivals included mainly young Moroccan men, as well as women, children and people from other countries. Spanish officials said more migrants attempted to cross the border fence the following morning, leading to clashes with police. Spain and Morocco have reportedly agreed to improve coordination and speed up the return of people who entered Ceuta irregularly.
