Etim Esin: Why Nigeria’s Super Eagles Still Need a Creative Midfielder

Etim Esin: Why Nigeria’s Super Eagles Still Need a Creative Midfielder

Former Super Eagles star Etim Esin says Nigeria still lacks a natural playmaker in the mould of legends like Henry Nwosu, Jay-Jay Okocha and himself. He highlighted the gap as a key weakness in the current squad. Speaking on the Play Zone Podcast, Esin named Ademola Lookman as the closest option but felt he has not fully shown that spark for the national team. For his club, he performs well, yet Nigeria still misses real magic in midfield. Esin explained that a true number ten acts as the squad’s architect. Such a player draws defenders, creates space and lays chances for teammates. He stressed that this creative force would intimidate opponents and boost the team’s confidence.

Esin raises a good point, but the current squad already has several players who can unlock defences if given consistent midfield support.

Coaches should invest more training time in ball-distribution drills to groom a dedicated playmaker for Nigeria's national team setup.
