Cholera Hits Borno: 37 Dead, Over 3,000 Cases Across Seven LGAs

The Borno State government has declared a health emergency after more than 3,000 people were infected and 37 lives lost to cholera in seven local government areas during May. Maiduguri Metropolitan Council remains the epicentre with over 2,000 cases. Jere has recorded more than 1,000 infections, while Mafa, Konduga, Monguno, Ngala and Magumeri are also affected. Health officials warn that contamination of water sources, poor sanitation and open defecation are driving the outbreak. With the rainy season underway, residents are urged to chlorinate drinking water, dispose of waste properly and wash hands regularly. Early reporting of symptoms like vomiting and watery diarrhoea is critical. The state is partnering with agencies such as WHO, UNICEF and MSF and working to secure vaccines, but emphasizes that hygiene measures remain the first line of defence.

I'm not convinced that declaring an emergency alone will improve sanitation or access to clean water in these areas.

Establishing temporary water purification points and distributing oral rehydration salts could help reduce fatalities and slow transmission promptly.
