Family Petitions IGP to Release Body of Late Nurse Mary Habila

Family Petitions IGP to Release Body of Late Nurse Mary Habila

The family of Mary Habila has petitioned Inspector-General Olatunji Disu to order the immediate release of her remains for burial. Their lawyer, Kaile Yusuf, spoke at the Force Headquarters in Abuja about the family’s efforts and the police’s delay. Habila, a qualified nurse who served at David Umahi University of Health Sciences before her posting to the Minister of Works’ office, died on June 27 in Ebonyi State. The family says they have met all police requirements and reject calls for an autopsy on personal, cultural and traditional grounds. Yusuf accused unnamed persons of politicising the matter and demanded transfer of the case to Force Headquarters, along with disciplinary action against any officers acting unlawfully. Habila’s father appealed for a dignified burial, insisting the family maintains cordial relations with her workplace.

What reasons do you think explain the delay in releasing Nurse Mary Habila's remains despite the family's petition?

Could the hold-up stem from pending autopsy or police clearance on her case?

It seems odd that the police would hold a body after a formal petition to the IGP, especially when burial timelines matter deeply.

I understand the family's frustration, but shouldn't we consider that the police might follow protocol before releasing her remains?

The family could follow up with a court motion or appeal directly to the Police Service Commission to expedite the release.
