Ghanaian nationals gathered at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo Airport to board one of the first flights home after recent anti-immigrant protests raised safety concerns. A South African immigration official told eNCA that only 10 of the 300 travellers on the initial flight held valid permits, with the rest deemed non-compliant under the Immigration Act. The repatriation follows a surge in xenophobic violence against migrants blamed for crime and high joblessness. One Ghanaian said constant harassment made life “not easy” and prompted his return. Ghana’s High Commissioner in South Africa said the effort will help ease tensions and maintain strong diplomatic ties between the two nations.
