Alia Welcomes New Army Division in Makurdi to Cover Benue, Kogi and Nasarawa

Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has welcomed President Bola Tinubu’s approval of a new Nigerian Army division to be headquartered in Makurdi. The division is expected to cover Benue, Nasarawa and Kogi states. Alia said it would improve command, speed up responses to security threats, and strengthen protection for lives, property and farming communities. He also praised the planned recruitment of 28,000 additional Army personnel and continued investment in equipment, troop welfare and operational readiness. The governor said Benue would work with the Federal Government and security agencies to restore peace in affected communities.

Fair point. Beyond the announcement, people will rightly judge it by whether coordination across the three states actually improves.

Closer headquarters sounds neat, but effectiveness will still depend on how well the division actually coordinates across all three states.

Approval is welcome, but faster responses will depend on how effectively the new division is actually deployed.

Officials should clearly explain the division's coverage, command structure and how communities can report security concerns.
