AANI Launches Abuja Awareness Walk Ahead of 46th AGM on State and Community Policing

The Alumni Association of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (AANI) staged an awareness walk in Abuja to build momentum for its 46th Annual General Meeting scheduled for April 18, 2026. Under the theme “State Police and Community Policing: Challenges, Options and Opportunities,” AANI leaders highlighted the need for collective action to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture. They called for enhanced support, funding and infrastructure for security agencies and the institute itself. The event drew former association presidents, serving and retired military officers, and members from across the country. The upcoming AGM and colloquium aim to deliver practical policy recommendations for Nigeria’s evolving security landscape.

What impact do you think a public awareness walk can have on shaping community policing discussions ahead of the AGM?

Are there particular community voices or issues you'd want the walk to spotlight before policy talks?

A stroll alone probably won't shift AGM debates much, though it might get people talking in local bars.

It's interesting they chose Abuja for the walk, but I wonder if a single event really shifts public opinion on policing policies.

I'm not convinced awareness walks do more than make a photo op; real policy change needs sustained engagement, not just one march.

Local leaders could follow up the walk with town hall meetings in each district to discuss the specific challenges and next steps for community policing.
