Transport Fares Rise as Petrol Hits ₦1,400 a Litre Across Nigeria

Transport fares have climbed again in parts of the country as petrol prices rose to as high as ₦1,400 per litre. The latest increase followed a jump in global crude oil prices, with Brent crossing $100 per barrel amid renewed tensions in the Middle East. Marketers in Lagos, Warri, Calabar, Abuja, Ibadan, Ilorin, Kaduna, Adamawa, Kano and Maiduguri have adjusted pump prices upward, while some transport operators are already passing the cost on to commuters. Residents say the higher fuel cost is also pushing up food prices and other basic services. Drivers and passengers say the situation is worsening hardship because fuel prices keep changing without warning. Analysts blame the deregulated market, exchange rate pressure and limited local crude supply, while urging the government to take steps that can help stabilise prices.
