INEC Proposes Mock Poll and Tech Audit to Strengthen 2027 Elections

INEC Proposes Mock Poll and Tech Audit to Strengthen 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission is planning a mock presidential vote and a full audit of its election technology to boost preparations for 2027. INEC chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan SAN said the moves address concerns over the reliability of the BVAS machines and the IReV portal from the last election. The plan also includes a cybersecurity review covering system redundancy, penetration testing and disaster recovery. The commission will explore funding options since these measures were not in the current budget. INEC aims to work with development partners like the UK and IFES to ensure credible, transparent and inclusive polls.

It's clear the mock vote aims to boost public trust, but past audits sometimes failed to fix technical glitches.

A mock election alone won't prevent machine failures or manipulation; focus should also be on training officials and securing power sources.

INEC should publish audit results promptly and invite independent experts to verify findings before the main poll next year.
