Why Poverty and Ignorance Weaken Nigeria’s Democracy
Each Democracy Day brings both hope and frustration. We celebrate survival but lament continued hardship. Our forebears bled for this freedom, and we owe them more than empty praise. True freedom requires leaders chosen by the people under the rule of law. We must vote out non-performing officials and refuse to accept entitlement based on power alone. Democracy only works when citizens engage. Too many Nigerians sell or skip their votes, unaware of how local councils and assemblies function. Ignorance and poverty trap us in a cycle of control. We must learn our civic duties. Attend assembly sessions, observe court proceedings, and hold legislators accountable. Knowledge is the key to safeguarding justice, freedom, and the rule of law.
