UK Tightens Student Visa Rules and Threatens University Sponsorships
The UK Home Office has introduced immediate changes that may stop some universities from sponsoring international students. These measures aim to curb visa abuse and asylum claims linked to student visas. Officials say thousands of student visa holders applied for asylum last year. Under new standards, universities must boost course completion rates to 90% and enrollment rates to 95%. A traffic-light rating system will launch in summer 2027, with red-rated schools facing caps or sponsorship loss. Migration Minister Mike Tapp insists genuine students remain welcome but warns against using study visas as a backdoor to asylum or illegal work. Nigerian applicants can still pursue UK studies, but institutions will now face stricter compliance checks.
