Tinubu Orders Ben Ayade to Withdraw from 2027 Senate Race

Tinubu Orders Ben Ayade to Withdraw from 2027 Senate Race

Former Cross River governor Prof. Ben Ayade has bowed to President Bola Tinubu’s directive to step down from the 2027 Senate contest for Cross River North. Ayade said he was invited to Abuja for a high-level consultation with the Presidency. He described the request as painful and tearful, recalling his early support for Tinubu’s 2023 bid and his role as the South-South’s first APC governor. The ex-governor highlighted his contributions during the last election and his current free transport scheme backing Tinubu’s re-election. He appealed for a review, noting his constituency has only enjoyed eight years of senatorial representation versus his rival’s 20 years.

What does Tinubu's decision to bypass Ayade mean for Cross River North's political autonomy and local representation?

I agree, this directive seems to undercut Cross River North's ability to choose their own representative.

I get your worry, but it may be too early to say local representation is under threat.

It's striking that Ayade described the directive as painful yet complied without any public resistance or debate.

Maybe Ayade's withdrawal wasn't just about loyalty; perhaps he saw deeper political costs that outweigh the Senate seat.

Local party stakeholders should use this moment to strengthen internal processes and ensure candidates reflect constituents' interests more transparently.
