LAMATA Rolls Out AI-Powered Smart Traffic System Across Lagos Corridors

LAMATA Rolls Out AI-Powered Smart Traffic System Across Lagos Corridors

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) is equipping selected corridors with AI-driven traffic infrastructure that adapts in real time to road demand. Cameras, sensors, GPS and RFID technology will prioritise public transport, adjust signal timings and detect violations to improve traffic flow and road safety. Solar-powered units will be deployed in phases, with data feeding into an AI hub for forecasting and investment planning. Smart enforcement tools will transmit speeding and violation alerts to control centres, helping to reduce accidents and delays. Speakers at a recent IoT and Cloud Expo emphasised that the main barrier to smart mobility in Nigeria is poor coordination among agencies. They urged a unified framework to integrate AI, IoT and policy, while noting ongoing efforts to introduce electric buses and sustainable transport solutions.
