Ancelotti Defends Neymar's World Cup Place Despite Fitness Concerns

Ancelotti Defends Neymar's World Cup Place Despite Fitness Concerns — 1 of 3
1 / 3

Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti has defended Neymar's inclusion in the 2026 World Cup squad despite concerns over the forward's fitness. Neymar, 34, missed Brazil's opening group matches against Morocco and Haiti with a grade-two calf strain. He was unable to make the technical impact expected as Brazil exited in the Round of 16 against Norway. Ancelotti said Neymar's attitude and conduct within the squad were positive, but admitted the veteran could have prepared better before the tournament. Neymar has since announced his retirement from international football after a 16-year career with Brazil. The coach is now expected to begin rebuilding the Selecao ahead of the 2030 World Cup.

Do you think Neymar can still make a meaningful impact later in the tournament after missing Brazil's opening matches with that calf strain?

I agree, though people may be writing him off too quickly. A fit Neymar can still add something important when called upon.

Ancelotti backing him publicly makes sense, but a grade-two calf strain puts plenty of attention on how carefully Brazil manage his return.

Defending the squad place is one thing; expecting Neymar to immediately carry Brazil after a fitness setback may be asking too much.

Brazil should judge him session by session and use him gradually, rather than forcing a starting role before the calf is ready.
