When Education Becomes a Business: Declining University Admission Standards
When schools chase revenue, admission standards fall. Not all qualified students can afford high fees. Institutions then lower entry requirements to fill slots with anyone who can pay. In the 1990s, university tuition and accommodation were cheap. Only the top O-Level and UME performers gained entry. It was rare to score above 200 in JAMB or get five credits including Maths and English. To restore rigour, the government should offer scholarships instead of loans. Candidates must hold credits in Maths and English and meet a minimum JAMB score. This will strengthen competition and protect academic quality.
