Victor Ikpeba Hails Christian Chukwu as Nigeria’s Greatest Football Legend

Victor Ikpeba Hails Christian Chukwu as Nigeria’s Greatest Football Legend — 1 of 2

Former African Footballer of the Year Victor Ikpeba has paid tribute to the late Christian Chukwu. He described Chukwu as the greatest player in Nigerian history. Chukwu led Nigeria to its first Africa Cup of Nations title in 1980 and won the continental club championship with Enugu Rangers in 1977. He later served as coach for both the Golden Eaglets and the Super Eagles. Speaking on SuperSport’s Monday Night Football, Ikpeba recalled watching Chukwu as a young fan. He insisted that despite generations of talent—from the 1994 squad to today’s stars—no one matches Chukwu’s enduring legacy.

Ikpeba's tribute sounds heartfelt, but calling Chukwu the greatest ever seems to ignore other stars like Yekini or Kanu.

Maybe we should start honoring past legends through local tournaments or museum exhibits to keep their stories alive for younger fans.
