Mission 300 Powers 50 Million Africans in Two Years, Nigeria Among Top Beneficiaries
Since its 2024 launch, Mission 300 has connected over 50 million people in 40 African countries to electricity. The programme targets 300 million new connections by 2030 through power infrastructure investments and sector reforms. The World Bank and African Development Bank have committed nearly $15 billion and secured co-financing and partner support, mobilising over $90 billion in total funding. Leaders say electricity access fuels jobs, healthcare, education and economic growth. So far, Tanzania’s 7.5 million new connections lead the way, followed by 4.6 million each in Ethiopia and Nigeria. Thirty countries have adopted National Energy Compacts to expand affordable power access. Recent approvals include a $50 million World Bank window for solar farming projects and a $3.9 million AfDB grant to implement energy compacts in Nigeria and 12 other nations. More reforms and investments are expected as Mission 300 scales up.
