When Elders and Youth Unite: Lessons from Macaulay and Azikiwe
Scripture: “The glory of young men is their strength, and the splendor of old men is their gray head.” — Proverbs 20:29 NKJV In 1944, Herbert Macaulay, aged eighty, joined forces with the forty-year-old Nnamdi Azikiwe to launch the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons. Macaulay brought moral authority and decades of grassroots advocacy, while Azikiwe contributed fresh energy, a powerful media platform, and the charisma to mobilize diverse communities. Their partnership spanned generational and ethnic divides, setting the stage for Nigeria’s independence. When Macaulay passed away in 1946, Azikiwe carried the movement forward, becoming Nigeria’s first indigenous Governor-General and later its president. This historic alliance shows how blending wisdom with vitality can achieve what neither could alone. Who is your Macaulay, and who are you being a Macaulay to today? Prayer: Father, I honor those who built the foundations I stand on. Grant me wisdom to partner across generations, to learn from elders, and to invest in emerging leaders. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
