Nigerian Pleads Guilty to $50M Business Email and Romance Scam in US
A Nigerian national, Animashaun Adebo, entered a guilty plea in a Brooklyn federal court for his role in business email compromise and romance fraud schemes that defrauded individuals and small businesses of more than $50 million. According to a U.S. Department of Justice announcement, Adebo and his co-conspirators used spoofed emails and fake identities to trick victims into wiring funds to shell company accounts. They then laundered the proceeds through luxury watch purchases and an illicit currency exchange operation. Co-defendant Idowu Ademoroti has already been convicted, and Nelson Ojeriakhi was extradited from France and pleaded guilty last year. Another associate remains at large as prosecutors continue to pursue justice for the victims.
