Abuja Court Threatens Jail for Lawyers Delaying Malami’s Asset Forfeiture Case
Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court in Abuja has warned that any lawyer flouting court rules to delay the EFCC’s forfeiture suit against 57 properties linked to ex-AGF Abubakar Malami will face contempt charges and possible jail time. EFCC lead counsel Jibrin Okutepa told the court that several lawyers served their processes weeks late, despite an interim order published in January. When unlisted counsel tried to enter appearances, the judge refused to recognise them. The court ordered all parties to file and serve their processes by April 27 or risk being shut out, and set May 26 for the hearing of all applications. Justice Abdulmalik stressed that contempt sanctions, including jail, would follow any further rascallity, according to a national news agency report.
