Lagos NGOs Empower 21 Mental Health Ambassadors in Two-Day Training

Two NGOs, Women Right and Health Project (WRAHP) and Ireti Resource Centre, teamed up with the African Women Development Fund to launch a two-day training for 21 mental health ambassadors in Lagos. The programme covers the basics of mental health, myths versus facts, stigma reduction, and psychological first aid. Facilitators from LagosMIND also addressed barriers faced by women and other vulnerable groups. Participants will use their new skills to offer support in their communities. A representative from the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities praised the insights and plans to share them at upcoming women’s meetings.

True, training local ambassadors can boost understanding of mental health and reduce stigma in neighbourhoods.

It's interesting two NGOs partnered for this, yet a two-day training might be too brief to tackle deep-rooted stigma effectively.

Before praising, let's remember that myth-versus-fact sessions alone can't change long-held attitudes without ongoing support structures in place.

It might help to pair each ambassador with a local clinic or community group for follow-up mentoring after the initial training days end.
