1977 Tenerife Airport Disaster: The Deadliest Air Collision and Its Lasting Impact
On 27 March 1977, the world’s worst commercial aviation accident occurred at Los Rodeos Airport in Tenerife. Two Boeing 747s, diverted due to a bomb threat at Gran Canaria, collided in dense fog. In total, 583 people lost their lives that afternoon. Heavy fog and a congested airfield forced departing planes onto the runway. Miscommunications between the KLM crew and air traffic control led KLM Flight 4805 to begin its takeoff roll while Pan Am Flight 1736 was still taxiing. The two aircraft struck each other at high speed. Investigators cited a fatal mix of misunderstood radio calls and rigid cockpit hierarchy. This tragedy prompted the aviation industry to adopt Crew Resource Management training and standardized radio phrases. These changes have since become critical to flight safety worldwide. We honour the memory of the 583 victims and salute the courage of the 61 survivors. Their story reminds us that clear communication and teamwork are essential to protecting lives.
