EFCC Chair Warns Six in Ten University Students Are Involved in Internet Fraud
At a pro-chancellors’ conference in Kano, the EFCC chair revealed that investigations over the past year show roughly 60% of Nigerian undergraduates take part in cybercrime. He highlighted recent operations which arrested 792 suspects linked to a transnational fraud ring, many of whom were students. Some even compromised academic integrity by allegedly putting lecturers on their payroll. The chairman blamed weak oversight and manual systems in universities for creating vulnerabilities such as ghost workers, inflated contracts and fund diversion. He urged governing councils to strengthen controls and collaborate with law enforcement. To tackle the trend, he called for AI-driven governance tools to improve fraud detection, payroll management and financial accountability while maintaining human oversight.
