Court of Appeal Affirms Hanging Sentence for Cleric Who Killed Kwara College Student
The Court of Appeal in Ilorin has dismissed the appeal of Abdulrahman Bello, upholding his death sentence by hanging for the murder of Hafsoh Yetunde Lawal, a student of Kwara State College of Education. A three-member panel led by Justice Gabriel Omoniyi Kolawole found that the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt that Bello murdered Lawal, dismembered her body, and kept parts for suspected ritual purposes. The court held there was no error in the trial court’s handling of the evidence. Bello was accused of luring Lawal through Facebook, killing her during a naming ceremony visit, and concealing her remains in his Ilorin home. His claim that she died of an asthma attack was rejected after investigators discovered dismemberment tools and human remains at his residence.
