Lagos to Launch State-Issued Driver’s Licence Amid 737,000 Traffic Violations
Lagos State will introduce its own driver’s licence in partnership with the Federal Government to boost road safety and speed up the application process for motorists. The Commissioner for Transportation announced that the new state-issued licence will be available alongside the federal option. Motorists can choose either licence under the collaborative scheme. This initiative aims to cut delays in processing, strengthen digital traffic enforcement and improve vehicle monitoring. The state recorded 737,340 violations through its ANPR camera system and issued over one million roadworthiness certificates during the review period. In partnership with relevant agencies, Lagos processed more than 56,000 driver’s licences and 1,158 international permits. The rollout marks a key step in modernising transport administration and ensuring safer roads in Nigeria’s commercial capital.
