From Sokoto to Texas: How This 27-Year-Old Nigerian Earned His PhD
Muneer Yaqub is a Nigerian microbiologist who completed his PhD at the University of Texas at Dallas by age 27. He specialises in antimicrobial resistance and investigates highly drug-resistant hospital pathogens at the Dillon Lab. He began his academic journey at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, driven by curiosity about why some infections defy treatment. Despite limited guidance on funding and applications, he secured a fully funded doctoral fellowship in the US through persistence and careful positioning. While at UT Dallas, Muneer served as Graduate Student Representative and founded ScholarshipHQ to guide international students toward funded graduate opportunities. His work earned him the Outstanding Graduate Student award, recognising his academic excellence, service, and perseverance. Beyond the lab, he has presented at major conferences and published in outlets such as Science Magazine. He now aims to apply his research on antimicrobial resistance to real-world challenges and continue mentoring aspiring scholars.
