When Graduation Day Loses Its Dignity: A Call for Character in Celebrations

When Graduation Day Loses Its Dignity: A Call for Character in Celebrations — 1 of 3
1 / 3

Graduation should mark growth and responsibility, not reckless displays that tarnish our youth and community. Certificates prove learning, but character reveals true education. Too often, end-of-school celebrations include indecent behaviour that brings shame to families, schools and society. Students deserve pride and hope, not embarrassment. Government, schools and parents must restore character development alongside academics. Teachers and principals should mentor and guide. Parents must reinforce discipline and respect at home. Students should ask: “Who have I become while earning this certificate?” before celebrating. True success is measured in dignity, not noise. Before we cheer the end of school, let’s decide whether we’re celebrating achievement or loss of values. Education without character is incomplete.

Schools could set clear codes of conduct for graduation events and involve student leaders in planning to ensure celebrations remain respectful and meaningful.
