Anambra Court Sentences Son to Death for Killing His 74-Year-Old Mother
Justice Lauretta Oyeka of the Anambra State High Court in Ogidi has sentenced 37-year-old Chidubem Anawonwa to death by hanging. He was found guilty of murdering his 74-year-old mother, Theresa Anawonwa, in their Umuokokpa Aborji home on April 23, 2019. Prosecutors presented testimony from five witnesses detailing a history of violence, including physical abuse and threats. On the day of the crime, Chidubem strangled his mother after inflicting multiple bruises, while his niece was locked in another room. Rejecting his alibi defence, the court upheld the charge under Section 271 of the Criminal Code and delivered the maximum sentence. The state’s legal team was led by Chief State Counsel Obiageli Nwankiti and Principal State Counsel Uju Igboeli.
