How Buba Galadima Recruited Buhari to Stop OPC’s Rampage in Ilorin

NNPP chieftain Buba Galadima revealed on a national TV programme how he and other northern leaders convinced retired General Muhammadu Buhari to join politics. They acted after the Oduduwa People’s Congress mobilised hundreds of vehicles and invaded Ilorin in 1999 and 2000 to uproot Fulani structures. Galadima said former President Obasanjo and then Lagos Governor Bola Tinubu did nothing to stop the OPC attacks. He and 33 others met in Kaduna and decided to use either the ballot or the gun to change the situation. They settled on Buhari and persuaded him to enter partisan politics. According to Galadima, Buhari’s entry checked the OPC threat and forced Obasanjo’s government to finally confront the group. He called this “the first purpose” of bringing Buhari into politics, with the rest becoming history.

What motivated Buba Galadima and other northern leaders to persuade Buhari into politics after the OPC attacks in Ilorin?

Did they believe Buhari had unique influence to check OPC's actions, or was there another aim behind their push?

It seems unlikely a retired general would step into politics simply over civilian mob violence without other strategic motivations at play.

What leads you to believe he wasn't genuinely worried about public safety before eyeing political gain?

I'm not convinced the OPC's actions alone prompted that recruitment. Northern leaders might have had larger ambitions in mind.

Future political interventions should focus on strengthening local security structures rather than relying on retired military figures to restore order.
