Texas Jury Convicts Nigerian Priest of Sexual Assault
A Nigerian-born Catholic priest serving in the US has been found guilty by a Texas jury on multiple counts of sexual assault. Fifty-seven-year-old Father Anthony Odiong was convicted of one count of first-degree sexual assault and two counts of second-degree sexual assault. During the trial in Waco, prosecutors presented testimony from women who said Odiong abused his position as their spiritual advisor to coerce them into sexual relationships. One victim described how the priest had intercourse with her while providing counselling during her divorce. Evidence included DNA tests linking Odiong to a child fathered with another woman under his spiritual care in Louisiana. Although the priest pleaded not guilty, he could face life imprisonment when sentencing begins on June 1.
