Senate Approves ₦50m Relief for Families of Five Killed in Oyo School Abduction

Senate Approves ₦50m Relief for Families of Five Killed in Oyo School Abduction

The Senate has unanimously approved a ₦50 million donation to support the next of kin of five Nigerians who lost their lives during the Oyo school kidnapping crisis. Each bereaved family will receive ₦10 million following a proposal by Senate President Godswill Akpabio at Wednesday’s plenary. Those who died include two Army personnel Lieutenant F. A. Isaac and Private Silas Musa one police officer, Sergeant Abena John Jerome and two teachers, Deacon John Olaleye and Michael Oyedokun. The donation recognises their sacrifices and aims to ease the burden on their dependants. The decision came after security agencies rescued the abducted schoolchildren and teachers following 56 days in captivity. Senate President Akpabio praised President Bola Tinubu and the nation’s security chiefs for their efforts and directed that cheques be presented to the families on behalf of the upper chamber. Senators expressed hope that the financial intervention will honour the fallen heroes and provide comfort to their loved ones during this difficult time.

How do you think this ₦50 million relief will impact the grieving families and local community moving forward?

I'm all for it! This funding should bring some needed comfort and help rally neighbours around those families as they pick up the pieces.

It feels generous on the surface, yet I wonder if a one-time donation can address the deeper security failures and lasting trauma.

I get say the Senate gesture matters, but na only cash doesn't heal pain or guarantee better safety in our schools.

To ensure support reaches families quickly, local NGOs could partner with state agencies to streamline fund distribution and provide counselling services.
