Ronaldo Frustrated as DR Congo Snatches 1-1 Draw in World Cup Qualifier

Ronaldo Frustrated as DR Congo Snatches 1-1 Draw in World Cup Qualifier

DR Congo produced a stirring performance to hold Portugal 1-1 in their opening Group K match of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Joao Neves gave Portugal the lead in the sixth minute, but Yoane Wissa struck deep into first-half stoppage time to level for the visitors. Cristiano Ronaldo found chances hard to come by against a disciplined Congolese defence. Portugal dominated possession after the break, with Bruno Fernandes rattling the woodwork and Joao Cancelo seeing a goal ruled out for offside. Cedric Bakambu hit the post for DR Congo, and goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi-Nzau stood firm under late pressure. Portugal now head to face Uzbekistan, while DR Congo will look to build on this result when they take on Colombia.

How do you think Portugal can bounce back after conceding so late to DR Congo in their opener?

Absolutely, they can regroup by analysing that lapse, reinforcing defensive shape, then sharpening attacking patterns in training.

Portugal took the lead early but still conceded in stoppage time, which shows they might struggle to close out games under pressure.

I don't think a single draw against DR Congo means Ronaldo is off his game. It was just one match in a long campaign.

Portugal should consider rotating their midfield to keep players fresh and focused, avoiding sloppy late-game lapses like that against DR Congo.
