Coroner Suspends Inquest Into Chimamanda Adichie’s Son’s Death After AG’s Directive
A coroner’s court at Igbosere Magistrate Court on Lagos Island has suspended the inquest into the death of 21-month-old Nkanu Adichie-Esege. Reports say the hearing was halted on May 5 following a directive from the Lagos State Attorney-General to postpone the case until a meeting with all parties on May 12, 2026. Presiding coroner Magistrate Atinuke Adetunji criticised the AG’s move, stressing that judicial independence prevents the Ministry of Justice from stopping court proceedings. Counsel for the family, Senior Advocate Adeyinka Aderemi, noted that the child’s father was present and ready to testify when the inquest was unexpectedly adjourned. The inquest, which began on February 25, examines the circumstances surrounding Nkanu’s death on January 7, 2026, while arrangements were being made to transfer him abroad for further treatment. The case remains on hold pending further direction from the Chief Coroner, Justice Mojisola Dada.
