Forum Calls on Marine Minister to Suspend Disenrollment of 100 Cadets at Maritime Academy

Forum Calls on Marine Minister to Suspend Disenrollment of 100 Cadets at Maritime Academy

The South-South Integrity Forum has urged the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, to intervene in a plan by the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron, to withdraw around 100 students for poor academic performance. The group warns that many affected cadets have yet to have their second-semester results factored into their grades. It insists that due process—fair hearing, probation and carry-over exams—must be exhausted before any student is disenrolled. Leaders of the forum highlight the potential psychological, emotional and financial strain on students and their families. They also question the academy’s teaching quality, academic supervision and learning environment. The forum calls on the minister to set up an independent panel to review the academy’s procedures and ensure full compliance with the Maritime Academy Act. It stresses the need for transparency, accountability and compassion in handling struggling cadets.

It seems academic performance alone is driving those withdrawal plans, yet there's little mention of remediation options or support structures for struggling cadets.

Calling on the minister to halt disenrollment overlooks the importance of maintaining rigorous standards and could undermine accountability among cadets.

A structured mentoring scheme combined with periodic assessments would identify at-risk cadets early and offer targeted support before matters escalate to disenrollment.
