Veteran Ranger Gored to Death by Rhino During Anti-Poaching Patrol
A seasoned anti-poaching operative died after a black rhino he was tracking turned on him. Schoeman van Jaarsveld and his team were monitoring GPS-tagged rhinos at Samara Karoo Reserve. The animal charged from cover, critically injuring him. Emergency services arrived, but Jaarsveld died at the scene. Another team member suffered minor injuries. No shots were fired and the rhino was unharmed. Van Jaarsveld led a private security unit dedicated to protecting endangered wildlife. Colleagues paid tribute to his dedication and bravery. The reserve is investigating the incident and offered condolences to his family.
