LAWMA Unveils Transfer Stations and Waste-to-Energy Plants to End Lagos’ 15,000-Tonne Daily Waste Backlog
The Lagos Waste Management Authority is rolling out a series of infrastructure and operational reforms to clear the growing waste backlog across Lagos State. Two ageing landfills are being phased out and replaced by modern transfer loading stations and material recovery facilities. The new sites will process thousands of tonnes of refuse each day and mechanically recover up to 90 percent of incoming waste. LAWMA is also deploying waste-to-energy technologies, including biodigesters that convert organic market waste into biogas for electricity and cooking gas. The projects are expected to create around 5,000 direct jobs and begin operations in early 2027. Stronger enforcement measures are under way through Project WISE, with undercover teams monitoring illegal dumping, prosecuting offenders and seizing convictions through environmental courts. Residents are reminded to keep waste bins, subscribe to licensed Private Sector Participation operators and report collection delays for a 48-hour backup response. Community engagement is being boosted via the LAWMA Academy, local waste task forces and a tricycle-based door-to-door collection model in hard-to-reach areas. Plans are also in place for community recycling centres where residents can exchange recyclables for cash. More compactor trucks and seven new transfer stations will support a cleaner environment by year-end.
