Taraba Court Hands Cleric 15-Year Term for Teen’s Death

Taraba Court Hands Cleric 15-Year Term for Teen’s Death

A Taraba State High Court in Jalingo has sentenced 27-year-old Islamic cleric Mallam Mubarak Hassan to 15 years behind bars. He was found guilty of culpable homicide in the death of 16-year-old Mustapha Ishyaku in Mutum Biyu. Chief Judge Joel Agya delivered judgment on March 27, 2026. He ruled that the sentence runs from Hassan’s arrest on March 3, 2022. Hassan was cleared of kidnapping and abduction charges after the prosecution failed to prove those counts. The judge reduced the original murder charge to culpable homicide not punishable by death due to weak evidence. The deputy director of State Prosecution welcomed the verdict, while the cleric’s lawyer says an appeal is forthcoming.
