Simbat’s Drive to Preserve Wakirike Language and Empower Rivers State Youth

In Rivers State, indigenous languages face losing ground to English and Pidgin. Tamuno-omie Silas, known as Simbat, is stepping up to safeguard the Wakirike dialect and foster local pride. He launched the annual Wakirike Dialect Competition to encourage young people to speak their mother tongue with confidence. The event celebrates local heritage and strengthens cultural identity among youth. Beyond language, Simbat supports sports at the Simbat Football Field in Okujagu Ama. Regular matches bring young people together for healthy competition and community building. By combining culture and sports, these grassroots efforts reinforce community ties. Simbat’s work offers a model for preserving indigenous traditions while creating positive opportunities for youth.

I get the importance of dialect contests, but focusing only on competitions might miss deeper cultural reasons youth favor English or Pidgin.
