Shakira’s Free Copacabana Concert Draws 2 Million Fans and Generates $155M for Rio
Shakira performed on Copacabana Beach to an estimated two million people. The free show was part of Rio’s Todo Mundo no Rio concert series. City Hall and Riotur estimate it will bring around 777 million reais, or roughly $155 million, back into the city. Tourist arrivals in May rose by 34.2 percent this year, following similar jumps after Madonna and Lady Gaga. Fans travelled from across Brazil and Europe, arriving early to stake out spots in the sand and support dozens of street vendors. Nearly 8,000 security officers patrolled the venue. Drones and facial recognition cameras helped keep the crowd safe. Shakira took the stage in Brazil’s colours and invited guests like Anitta, Caetano Veloso, and Maria Bethânia. She addressed the audience in Portuguese and recalled arriving in Brazil at 18 with only ambition. The Todo Mundo no Rio series is confirmed through 2028. Rio plans to keep transforming free beachfront shows into a major tourism revenue driver.
