Bonfrere Laments as Flying Eagles Miss 2027 U-20 AFCON After 4-1 Burkina Faso Loss
Former Super Eagles coach Johannes Bonfrere has criticised the state of Nigerian football after the Flying Eagles lost 4-1 to Burkina Faso in the WAFU B Championship final in Côte d’Ivoire. The defeat means Nigeria will miss the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations and, as a result, the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup. Burkina Faso had also beaten the Flying Eagles 2-0 in the group stage. Bonfrere said Nigeria’s failure to qualify is painful given the country’s pool of football talent. He also expressed concern about the Super Falcons, who lost 1-0 to Cameroon in the WAFCON 2026 quarter-finals and must beat South Africa to keep their hopes of reaching the 2027 Women’s World Cup alive through the intercontinental play-offs.
