Lagos to Demolish Article Shopping Complex, Issues Ultimatum to Odun-Ade Traders

Lagos to Demolish Article Shopping Complex, Issues Ultimatum to Odun-Ade Traders — 1 of 4
1 / 4

The Lagos State Building Control Agency has ordered demolition of the Article Shopping Complex in Satellite Town. Traders at Agric and Coker markets in Odun-Ade have been given 14 days to carry out integrity tests on distressed three-storey blocks. An enforcement team found several dilapidated and partly collapsed structures in both markets. Officials rejected traders’ repair plans and warned that building owners who ignore the order will face prosecution. At the Article Shopping Complex near the site of last week’s collapse, an additional office block was brought down. LASBCA says 90% of inspected buildings in Ajeromi-Ifelodun are unsafe. The state government insists it will maintain strict building standards to protect residents.

What will happen to traders forced out by the demolition order if they can't meet the 14-day integrity test requirement?

How exactly will authorities handle traders who don't pass the 14-day integrity test? Any plan for their resettlement or compensation?

This ultimatum seems harsh given the complexity of conducting building integrity tests across multiple markets and old structures.

Maybe Lagos State could offer technical support instead of strict deadlines that risk shutting down small traders entirely.

Local associations should pool resources to hire certified engineers for faster testing and share results with the agency before the deadline.
