Wike Inaugurates New FCT Council Chairmen, Demands Accountability and Offers Performance Rewards
Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, inaugurated the newly elected Area Council Chairmen at the FCDA Conference Hall in Abuja on June 15, 2026. He declared an end to administrative laxity, labour strikes, and unchecked spending at the local government level. He warned the new leaders that the celebration was over and “real work” must begin. “Your people fulfilled their civic duty. You must now deliver results,” he said, stressing their covenant with the electorate. The minister introduced strict fiscal oversight, forbidding chairmen from signing cheque books and threatening to involve the EFCC and ICPC if funds are mismanaged. He also tasked them with finding permanent solutions to strikes by local government employees and primary school teachers. Wike ordered chairmen to reside in their domains for security intelligence. He announced rewards for the councils that excel in peace and infrastructure delivery, set 100-day and one-year benchmarks, and urged monthly stakeholder briefings alongside youth and women empowerment. The Minister of State described this ceremony as a renewed commitment to accountability and inclusive grassroots growth.
