Special Forces and Drone Units Deployed to Oyo After Rising Kidnappings
The Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, has directed the deployment of special forces and aerial surveillance units to Oyo State following a series of abduction incidents. Defence Headquarters says the operation will bolster security in affected communities and secure the arrest of those behind the attacks. Military spokesperson Major General Michael Onoja offered condolences to victims’ families and confirmed that intelligence-led missions have already produced results. The expanded response brings together specialised ground troops and drone monitoring alongside state security agencies. In its May 2026 report, the military highlighted increased arrests, rescued civilians, militant surrenders, and recovered weapons and stolen petroleum products during nationwide operations. The Armed Forces reaffirmed their commitment to sustained pressure on criminal networks in Oyo, where recent kidnappings included students, teachers and research institute staff.
