Powerful Blast Rocks Qatar’s Ras Laffan Plant, 54 Injured and 18 Missing
At least 54 people were injured and 18 remain missing after a powerful explosion tore through a factory at Ras Laffan Industrial City in Qatar on Sunday night. Ras Laffan, about 80km north of Doha, hosts Qatar’s main liquefied natural gas export terminal. Qatar’s Interior Ministry called the blast at the Barzan gas facility a technical accident and said there is no threat to public safety. The Barzan plant can process 1.4 billion cubic feet of gas per day and produces ethane, condensate, liquefied petroleum gas and sulfur. Authorities say the explosion happened as workers were restarting operations, and rescue teams are still searching for the missing.
