FCTA Impounds 40 Vehicles in Abuja Crackdown on Roadside Operators

FCTA Impounds 40 Vehicles in Abuja Crackdown on Roadside Operators

The FCTA Enforcement Taskforce seized 40 commercial vehicles for operating outside the Mabushi Bus and Taxi Terminal. Dr Peter Olumuji said the exercise at Utako ran from Wednesday to Friday to enforce a June 24 directive for operators to relocate. Owners of the impounded vehicles will face prosecution under FCT traffic regulations. The move aims to keep commuters safe by ensuring all drivers and vehicles are registered and vetted at the new terminal. The FCT Transport Secretariat had issued notices and aired radio and TV jingles to drive compliance. Officials say the Mabushi facility can handle about 250 vehicles under a flow-through system and is already processing passengers with airport-style ticketing and card payments. Drivers and passengers praised the organized, secure environment. The FCTA vows to continue enforcement until full compliance is achieved.

Forty vehicles impounded seems steep for a three-day exercise, yet enforcement teams might struggle with consistent area coverage each day.

Enforcement is necessary, but seizing vehicles so abruptly risks wrecking drivers' livelihoods without giving them realistic relocation support first.

Local government could coordinate shuttle services from old spots to Mabushi terminal while operators sort out new routes, easing commuters' transition.
