The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency has confirmed a collision between MV Valparaiso and MT Lady Martina in the Bonny Channel, Rivers State. The incident at latitude 4.512375 and longitude 7.189429 triggered an oil spill in the area. NIMASA’s Public Relations head reported that the Deep Blue Base in Bonny received a distress call around 11:30 a.m. Armed personnel were deployed to rescue five injured crew members from the Nigerian-flagged tanker, who were treated at the forward operating base sickbay. The Singapore-flagged container vessel and the oil products tanker remain grounded pending damage assessment. NIMASA’s Director-General has ordered a full investigation and set up a Situation Monitoring Room to coordinate response and conduct an environmental impact assessment. Officials are working to contain the Tier One sheen and protect the marine environment.
