Boniface First Through the Door as Leverkusen Kick Off Preseason

Boniface First Through the Door as Leverkusen Kick Off Preseason — 1 of 4
1 / 4

Bayer Leverkusen playfully announced on social media that Nigerian striker Victor Boniface was the first player back for preseason. His return follows a tough loan at Werder Bremen, where he failed to score in 11 games and underwent knee surgery in December. Blocked transfers to AC Milan and Al-Nassr added to a disrupted year, but Leverkusen remain committed to his comeback under a contract running until 2028. Sporting director Simon Rolfes says the knee is in good shape but weight and conditioning are key. This preseason will be Boniface’s chance to fight for a place in the squad.

It's surprising they highlight him as first back given his struggles at Bremen and that surgery sidelined him for months.

Being first back for preseason doesn't necessarily prove Leverkusen's long-term faith in him after that difficult loan.

Leverkusen should focus on tailored fitness work and low-pressure friendlies to rebuild Boniface's confidence before competitive matches.
