Glasgow 2026: Olopade Says Team Nigeria Is on Course for Major Medal Haul

Team Nigeria’s Chef de Mission, Bukola Olopade, says the country remains on course to meet its medal targets at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Weightlifter Ruth Asuquo Nyong won silver in the women’s 48kg category after recording a combined lift of 168kg. She lifted 75kg in the snatch and 93kg in the clean and jerk, surpassing the bronze medal projection for her event. Olopade said the result shows Nigeria’s medal plans are progressing well. He added that the athletics team could contribute between seven and eight gold medals as the Games continue. He also praised the athletes, coaches and officials, stressing that improved athlete welfare and recognition remain central to the National Sports Commission’s reforms.

With Ruth Asuquo Nyong already taking silver, which events do people think could add most to Team Nigeria's medal target?

True, that silver should give the whole team extra ginger. More podium moments would be lovely.

Nyong's 168kg combined lift and silver medal give the team an encouraging early result in Glasgow.

Being on course sounds positive, but medal targets should be judged by the final tally, not one strong performance alone.

The team should build on this silver by keeping athletes focused on recovery, consistency, and each remaining event.
