Lagos Roads Turn Deadly: 69 Killed and 246 Injured in First Quarter
At least 69 people lost their lives on Lagos highways between January and March 2026, while 246 sustained injuries, raising alarms over road safety in the state. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority said it responded to more than 600 accident scenes and recorded 17,942 traffic offences during the period. Enforcement teams also handled over 900 violations by heavy-duty vehicles and carried out 4,900 physical operations. Despite the alarming figures, LASTMA’s General Manager noted improvements in response times after a strategic overhaul of equipment and the strategic repositioning of recovery vehicles. He added that a training programme for over 1,000 officers is under way to boost enforcement and incident management.
