The Tragic Murder of 14-Year-Old Reena Virk: Bullying, Justice and Aftermath
Reena Virk was a 14-year-old Canadian teenager who faced persistent bullying at school. Born on March 10, 1983, in Saanich, British Columbia, she struggled to fit in and rebelled against her family’s strict religious rules. On November 14, 1997, a group of teenagers lured Reena under the Craigflower Bridge. She was beaten, forced into shallow water, and drowned. Her body was found eight days later, and the brutal autopsy revealed severe bruising, a swollen brain, and pebbles in her throat consistent with drowning. Eight suspects were charged in connection with her death. Six girls pleaded guilty to assault. Two others, Kelly Ellard and Warren Glowatski, were convicted of second-degree murder. Their trials and appeals spanned more than a decade, culminating in the Supreme Court of Canada upholding the convictions in 2009. Ellard’s parole was denied in 2017, and her day parole was revoked in July 2024.
